Describing learners
Welcome back to my final blog of this semester (better late than never XD)
For this final entry I would share with you the different ways in which we can differentiate and describe the type of learners there are
Ages
Young children
Those children up to the ages of 9 or 10 learn differently
from older children, adolescents, and adults in the following ways:
- They respond to meaning even if they do not understand
individual words.
- They often learn indirectly rather than directly.
- Their understanding comes from what they see, hear, and –
crucially – from what they have the chance to touch and interact with
Adolescents:
They tend to be disruptive learners, yet when they find the purpose of the activity, they are often successful at it and are engaged and passionate when they like what they are being taught. And when they feel comfortable, they are willing to talk about their experiences.
- They are usually regarded as problematic students; however,
when they find the purpose of the activity, they usually do it successfully.
- They are usually committed and passionate when they like
what they are being taught.
- They are in a constant search of identity and self-esteem.
Adults:
Because of their age, they have expectations about their learning process and tend to be more disciplined. Therefore, they have a particular understanding of what they are learning.
- They can engage with abstract thought.
- They have a whole range of life experiences to draw on.
- They have expectations about their learning process.
Language Level
Students can be classified by the levels of CEFR “Common European Framework”, according to their knowledge of the language. The levels are A1-A2 (basic user), B1-B2 (independent user), and C1-C2 (proficient user).
Motivation
Finally there is motivation, this aspect can vary as what one
thing that may motivate some learners may not motivate others, some of the
motivators could be learn something new, people that influence them or that are
around them telling them that they can do it, just curiosity, or even by asking
themselves what society expects from them to achieve.
